In December 2021 we became aware of an issue where email forwarded from an Exchange OnLine account to a Gmail account is sometimes rejected by Gmail. UIS have advised the following workaround

If you normally manage your University mail through Gmail can you, temporarily, stop auto-forwarding your mail, and instead create an inbox rule on your Exchange Online mailbox to forward mail to Gmail:

They additionally state that

"The issue of Gmail rejecting University mail is being investigated.
The University PTR records appear to be correct, but it is possible that, as a result of headers being rewritten when mail is auto-forwarded, Google is mis-reporting an SPF failure.
There is no resolution or timescale on this."
