Professor Blake Sherwin awarded ERC Consolidator Grant
9 December 2025
Blake Sherwin, Professor of Cosmology and Astrophysics in DAMTP, is one of eight University of Cambridge researchers sharing a total of €17 million in the European Research Council's (ERC) Consolidator Grants 2025 awards. The grants support mid-career researchers to carry out cutting-edge research projects lasting up to five years.
Blake Sherwin's grant funded project will use the cosmic microwave background, the universe’s oldest light, as a 'backlight' to map where cosmic matter lies and how it moves. This will provide new insights into how the universe began and enable the research team to test ideas about how cosmic structure grew.

Three Faculty researchers invited as speakers at International Congress of Mathematicians 2026
30 September 2025
Three Cambridge mathematicians, Carola-Bibiane Schönlieb (Professor of Applied Mathematics, DAMTP), Richard Samworth (Professor of Statistical Science, DPMMS) and Julian Sahasrabudhe (Professor of Combinatorics, DPMMS), have been invited to speak at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in 2026.
The ICM is held every four years and represents the largest global gathering of mathematicians across all subjects, reflecting the vast diversity of today’s mathematics. The ICM sees the award of some of the most important prizes in mathematics, and the selection of invited speakers reflects outstanding achievements in their fields.
Professor Gary Gibbons FRS awarded 2025 Dirac Medal
11 August 2025
Professor Gary Gibbons FRS (Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics) has been awarded the 2025 Dirac Medal by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics. The prestigious award has been given for work that has redefined our understanding of gravity, alongside co-awardees Gary Horowitz (University of California, Santa Barbara), Roy Kerr (University of Canterbury, New Zealand), and Robert Wald (University of Chicago).
The Dirac Medal recognises their landmark contributions which have significantly shaped the study of general relativity across many generations. Their work collectively has laid the conceptual and technical foundations of our understanding of gravity, at both the classical and quantum levels.
Professor Perla Sousi wins LMS Whitehead Prize
21 July 2025
Professor Perla Sousi (Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics) has been awarded a 2025 Whitehead Prize by the London Mathematical Society. The prize recognises her groundbreaking and innovative contributions to probability theory, particularly the study of mixing and cutoff phenomena for Markov chains, which helped to revitalize this field of study, and her work leading the development of the potential theory of branching random walks on d-dimensional lattices, where her insights will have a lasting impact on the field.
