What is a UMD device
It is a computer system maintained by UIS.
When you have your own laptop you get to decide what is installed on it. However getting support from maths IT if something goes wrong is difficult.
When you run the department's windows desktop, IT decide what goes on your laptop. Getting support is easy if the device is in CMS.
The UMD system gives you a bit of the best of both worlds. For IT the systems run the same software, are on similar hardware and we can remote support you. You can customise the system a bit more like you might your own device.
UMDs come as desktop computers and laptops. In maths most people are receiving a laptop UMD because then you can bring it between home and work. For this to work out we need to ensure you have adequate equipment at home and in office (monitors, mouse and keyboard as you need them). We rely on you to tell us what you need for home use.
When you first get your UMD device you need to install it.
How to set up your UMD device
If your device is new then you will find a smart barcode on its box. That links to the instructions for install.
The UIS also keep the instructions on their website.
If you run into difficulties during setup drop an email to the maths helpdesk to arrange a time for someone to come to assist you. If you are remote we can set up a video call to assist you.
Alternatively you can contact the UIS on the address given on their page.
Once you have gone through the setup the UMD is now linked to your University Account.
What does it run
Windows 11. See Software section for how to install additional products.
