Who can supervise an undergraduate summer research project?
The below policy governs who may supervise an undergraduate summer research project in the Faculty of Mathematics:
- All supervisors of undergraduate summer research projects taking place in the Centre for Mathematical Sciences (CMS) must be affiliated with the Faculty of Mathematics (DAMTP or DPMMS) for the duration of the project.
- University Teaching Officers (UTOs) and College Teaching Officers (CTOs) with an established relationship with the Faculty are by default approved as supervisors.
- All other statuses (postdoctoral researchers, independent researchers, JRFs, Emeritus professors etc.) must submit a project proposal in order to participate. The project proposal is subject to approval by the programme directors and Heads of Department.
- Postdoctoral researchers and independent researchers should discuss their planned project with their PI or host / Faculty mentor and secure their approval before submitting the project proposal form.
- A backstop supervisor, who is a current UTO in the subject area, will be required for projects submitted by:
- Postdoctoral researchers and independent researchers who are new to supervising undergraduate summer research projects (e.g. PI or Faculty mentor / host).
- Emeritus professors. We need to ensure that the research area is still active.
- Postdoctoral researchers and independent researchers who are new to supervising undergraduate summer research projects (e.g. PI or Faculty mentor / host).
- The UTO backstop supervisor is expected to be involved enough with the project that they could provide a PhD reference for the summer student if requested.
- PhD students can be involved in undergraduate summer research projects, but not in the capacity of primary supervisor.
- We encourage every project supervisor to have a PhD student as a “project partner”: an additional point of contact with whom the summer student can discuss the project and who can also help to integrate the summer student into the appropriate group/pavilion.
