Summer Research in Maths (SRIM) programme
The Summer Research in Maths (SRIM) programme offers Cambridge undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct your own summer research project within the Centre for Mathematical Sciences (CMS) together with a supervisor from either the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) or the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics (DPMMS). You will be able to develop and extend your research skills, learn how to communicate your work to others, and build a strong academic profile.
Eligibility
The SRIM programme is open to Cambridge students in Part IB and Part II of the Mathematical Tripos. However, if you will need to make a bursary application to fund your project, please also refer to the ‘Funding your Project’ page to check the assessment criteria.
Please note: You may only register a SRIM project if you are going to remain in the UK for the duration of the project. Unpaid projects are not permitted and we are not able to employ / pay students working from outside of the UK.
Finding a Project
There are a number of possible ways of finding a project which are outlined below. We encourage you to explore them all and to start looking early.
- View the list of specific projects (*coming in January 2025*). Enquire about projects you are interested in by writing to the academic listed as the contact.
- Contact pre-approved supervisors from this list (*updates for 2025 coming soon*) to enquire about potential projects.
- Propose a project that you are personally interested in. Use the list of supervisors to identify potential supervisors in the appropriate research area and contact them to discuss your project proposal.
Timeline Summary
- Following discussion with potential supervisors, you must then submit the Expression of Interest form by Friday 28 February 2025 nominating a first and second choice supervisor.
- For reasons of fairness, we ask that supervisors refrain from committing to a specific student until after Friday 28 February 2025 so that all students have an equal chance to put themselves forward.
- Supervisors are also asked to confirm which student they would like to work with on a project by Friday 14 March 2025. This is designed so that students and supervisors then have time to put together a bursary application (if necessary), in time for the deadline on Monday 24 March 2025. For more information, please see the Funding your Project page.
- Projects take place for up to 8 weeks between June and September. Specific dates can be agreed between student and supervisor based on individual needs, however, we suggest Monday 7 July to Friday 29 August 2025 as events will be scheduled around these dates.
- The Summer Research Festival will take place on Monday 13 October 2025. This is the annual showcase of summer projects undertaken by students within the Centre for Mathematical Sciences. You’ll be invited to give a 20-minute presentation on your project.
All the important dates and deadlines for 2025 can be found on the Dates and Deadlines page.
