Virtual Open Days - Undergraduate Mathematical Tripos

In 2020 and 2021, we held our Open Days online, because of the restrictions imposed by COVID-19. Here you can find recordings of the live sessions, videos of pre-recorded maths talks, and other useful resources, for both the 2021 Open Days and the 2020 Open Days. You can also find these and other videos from recent online outreach events on the Faculty’s YouTube Channel.

Live sessions with Q&A

Find out about the structure of mathematics course in Cambridge, what our requirements are, and how we assess applicants. Plus the Q&A session with the Faculty Admissions Officer and three current students: Israel, Molly and Paul.
The Director of the STEP Support Programme explains how to tackle STEP questions, using as an example Q7 from STEP 2 in 2007. She is joined by three current undergraduates, Xander, Izaak and Sae during the Q&A session at the end.
The Head of the Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics Department explains what it is like to study Mathematics at Cambridge, what distinguishes us from other Mathematics faculties, and what careers prospects our graduates have. About half an hour at the end is devoted to a Q&A session with participants.

Live STEP workshops

Taster Lectures

Dr Ana Khukro delivers a sample lecture from the first year course 'Groups', as it was lectured to Cambridge Mathematics students is 2020-21.
Dr Maciej Dunajski delivers a sample lecture from the second year course 'Variational Principles', as it was lectured to Cambridge Mathematics students is 2020-21.

Mathematical talks

Dr Maciej Dunajski talks about the mathematics of curved spaces, beginning with bugs and ending with black holes. On the way, non-euclidean geometries are introduced, and you'll also learn some interesting facts relevant to flight paths and to map making.
Dr Orsola Rath Spivack talks about the Mathematics of Imaging, starting from the applications to the real world, from medical diagnostic to detecting buried mines or earthquake faults, from monitoring the health of tropical forests to fighting crime!

Live sessions with Q&A

Claire Metcalfe, Cambridge Mathematics graduate and experienced STEP resources developer, explains what STEP exams are, and gives advice on how to prepare. This webinar is followed by a Q&A session with Claire and Alex, one of our Student Ambassadors.

Mathematical talks

Professor Andrew Thomason, from the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, explore some interesting properties of random sequences, and their uses.
Dr Natasha Morrison, from the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, talks about networks and graphs and some very topical applications.
Dr Hamza Fawzi, from the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, talks about the mathematics used to store, recognize and classify images.
Dr Maria Ubiali, from the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, talks about the symmetries behind the Standard Model of particle physics.
