A short induction meeting is organised by the Faculty of Mathematics for first-year students. It takes place on the first Wednesday of the first term, the day before lectures begin.
Most students will already have been fully briefed about the course by their college Directors of Studies, so the induction meeting concentrates on a few important aspects of the art of being a mathematics student. There are short talks from members of staff followed by a student view.
The Faculty has produced a leaflet called Study Skills in Mathematics to help students generally fresh from school acquire the very different skills needed to make the best of our challenging mathematics course. This can be downloaded in PDF form.
In the third term the Faculty organises a meeting for first year students to discuss examinations and examination techniques. The Faculty has guidance notes intended to help you prepare for exams, with a focus on academic and educational matters.
