Currently the Part II examinations in the Mathematical Tripos are ‘cross-sectional’; all students sit four three-hour exam papers, each of which features questions from almost all of the lecture courses, and students attempt those questions they wish. The Faculty of Mathematics has decided to change this examination format to a ‘modular’ examination, where each individual course will have an examination paper, and students will choose in advance a selection of papers to sit.
Each examination will be designed to test students across the spectrum of ranges of ability, and the examination should reward both breadth and depth of understanding. The modular format will also enable students to receive more meaningful transcripts, and in due course may allow some diversification of the range of modes of assessment.
When will the modular examination be introduced?
The modular examination format will be in place for students taking Part II examinations in 2027-2028 and beyond.
What form will the modular examination take?
The Faculty is currently working towards implementation and will release further information to students as details are finalised.
