Research Project

You will work throughout the duration of your internship under the direction of your Supervisor on your summer research project. After the end of your project, you will be required to submit a one-page summary of your project, which is suitable for a general maths audience. This will be due one month after the end of your internship.

Mentorship

In addition to your Supervisor you will also have a Mentor, who will be a woman PhD student currently studying in the Faculty of Maths at Cambridge. You will be able to learn from your Mentor, hear about the experiences of PhD students, and discuss any questions you have regarding research, the internship, supervisors, career options, etc.

Events

Over the course of your internship there will be career focussed and academic events to provide help and information to you as you consider your future career in mathematics.

In addition to this, you will be invited to all events held over the summer in the CMS which are either aimed specifically at summer research students or may be of interest to you.  For example, a seminar series by Faculty members and external speakers on a variety of different topics.

Project Presentation

Towards the end of the summer (last week in August), Philippa Fawcett Interns are expected to present their research projects at the Cambridge Mathematical Placements (CMP) Presentation Day. The CMP Presentation Day is the annual showcase of the projects undertaken by Cambridge maths students outside of the Faculty, both academic and industrial – as such it is a fantastic networking opportunity! It will be a full-day event concluding with drinks and formal dinner at a Cambridge college.

Feedback

After the end of your project we will send you a feedback questionnaire to complete. It is a requirement of the programme to complete this. Your feedback is essential to help us build on the programme and make improvements in future years.
