Mathematical Research at the University of Cambridge

There has been much progress in the field of 1-relator groups
recently, but 2-generator 1-relator groups sometimes seem to be
the awkward case that gets left behind.

In this talk we will claim (possibly even providing evidence) that it can be useful instead to view 2-generator 1-relator groups within the family of deficiency 1 groups (groups with a presentation with the number of generators being one more than the number of relators).
