A submanifold S of a Riemannian manifold M is minimal if it a critical point of the area functional. I will explain how certain techniques from geometric measure theory developed to study minimal submanifolds can be applied to prove higher expansion properties and cover stability theorems for locally symmetric spaces. Based on a joint work with Ben Lowe.
