13th Andrew Chamblin Memorial Lecture: Professor John Ellis
Wed Mar 20th 2019, 5.00pm to 6.00pm
Venue:
Lady Mitchell Hall, Sidgwick Avenue, CB3 9DA
The 13th Andrew Chamblin Memorial Lecture returns to the Cambridge Science Festival. This year, our Guest Speaker is Professor John Ellis, Clerk Maxwell Professor of Theoretical Physics at King's College London, who will consider: ‘What are we? Where do we come from? Where are we going?’
This talk for a general audience, ages 16+, will discuss the power of scientific computing and give a few examples of computer simulations in physics. Before and after the talk, attendees will be able to view posters about cutting-edge research in this area, and meet PhD students and researchers who will be on hand to answer questions.
On Saturday 28 April and Saturday 5 May 2018 the Faculty of Mathematics is holding its main Open Days for prospective applicants for entry in 2019, with a full programme which includes mathematical talks, interview practice sessions, fun mathematical puzzles, and more.
This full-day event for Year 12 girls (ages 16-17) studying A-level Mathematics is designed to give a stimulating introduction to advanced mathematical problem-solving, and encourage more girls to apply to study Mathematics at university.
Can you handle the truth? Facts, figures and communicating uncertainty
Tue Nov 14th 2017, 5.30pm to 8.00pm
Venue:
Peterhouse Lecture Theatre, Cambridge
How do ‘experts’ feel about communicating uncertainty around facts and figures? A distinguished panel of producers, users and communicators of official statistics discuss how uncertainty is, could, and should be communicated.
Join volunteer staff and students from the Faculty of Mathematics to share the excitement of the subject through hands-on activities, games and demonstrations (featuring everything from custard to cosmology!) for visitors of all ages from 8 through to adult.
