Postgraduate Study in Mathematics

Award of the Master of Mathematics and the Master of Advanced Study in Mathematics

An unofficial guide by T. W. Körner

The Statutes and Ordinances of the University of Cambridge are not easy to understand. The following is less authoritative but possibly more comprehensible. Notice that it is the colleges who handle the award of degrees. If you complete Part III in Easter term 2011 or later you will receive the appropriate degree automatically. If you completed Part III earlier you have to apply for it through your college. If you do nothing you retain your right to apply for the degree later. You can take your degree in person or in absentia.

  1. Students who have successfully completed Part III for honours since 1962 and completed 12 terms of residence: you can apply for retrospective award of the MMath through your college.
  2. Students who have completed Part III for not for honours since 1962: you can apply for retrospective award of the MASt through your college.
  3. Students who either took Part III before 1962, or completed Part III for honours and only kept 9 terms of residence: you are entitled to inscribe 'I took Part III and all I got was this lousy T shirt' on the appropriate garment. We apologise.
  4. Students who complete Part III in Easter 2011 or later, and who have kept 12 terms of residence.: you will be awarded a BA+MMath.
  5. Students who complete Part III as a one-year course in Easter 2011 or later: you will be awarded a MASt in Mathematics.
