LONE WORKING AT CMS

“Lone working” covers all work proposed to be undertaken alone where the risk to the individual lone worker may be increased either by the work activity itself, or by the lack of available support should something go wrong.

Note that lone working can occur:

  • during normal working hours at an isolated location within the normal workplace

OR

  • when working outside normal working hours. Under both of these circumstances, the University’s guidance on lone working in departments and institutions will apply.
  • Work undertaken at weekends, bank holidays and when the Department or Institution is closed will be considered outside normal hours.

Normal working hours at CMS are 08:00 to 17:30 Monday to Friday.

If you are working outside these hours, then please ensure that your Line Manager or a colleague, family member or friend are aware of:

  • where in CMS you are working.
  • The hours you will be on site and estimated time of departure.
  • how to contact you (office or mobile phone).
  • The contact details for University Security – 01223 331818

You can also use University Security as a contact, giving the details above but please ensure that you inform them when you leave site.

If at any time your contact is concerned about your welfare or you do not get in touch with them at an agreed time, then they should contact Security. Security will visit CMS to attempt to make contact with you, as well as checking all security systems and the building you are working in.

Lone working is not prohibited, but if you wish to carry out any work that is considered as “High Risk” it must be authorised by the Head of Department or nominated competent person and a suitable Risk Assessment carried out.
