Athena SWAN is a Charter for the advancement of gender equality in Higher Education, through representation, progression and success for all. It was established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in STEMM subjects (science, engineering, technology, maths and medicine). Independent research has confirmed that both female and male academics benefit from involvement in the charter. The University of Cambridge was a founder member of the Athena SWAN Charter, won its first Bronze Athena SWAN Award in March 2006, successfully renewed in 2009 and 2012, and in 2014 achieved a Silver Athena SWAN award.
The Faculty of Mathematics submitted an application for a Bronze Department Award in November 2013 and received the award in April 2014. A Bronze Department Award indicates that a department has identified challenges particular to its discipline and is working to address these. The Faculty has made significant strides since 2013, and is currently implementing a wide-ranging action plan to ensure equal opportunities. We successfully renewed our Bronze Award in 2017.
