Welcome from the Heads of Departments
Welcome to the Faculty of Mathematics. The Faculty, like the wider University, is committed to a pro-active and inclusive approach to equality, which supports and encourages all under-represented groups, promotes an inclusive culture, and values diversity.
Our aim is that staff and students from all backgrounds feel confident in their ability, feel empowered to be themselves and can achieve their best here in the Centre for Mathematical Sciences (CMS). We recognise that diversity promotes innovation and creativity, and provides exposure to a wider range of ideas, skills and experiences which we can all benefit from, as well as helping us to attract and retain the best talent from around the world.
Together we can create an inclusive environment of tolerance and mutual respect where everyone feels valued, listened to and protected from discrimination. We want the Faculty to be a safe and supportive learning environment and we are striving to ensure our commitment to inclusion is put into practice.
We expect all staff and students to be equally valued and treated with respect, courtesy and consideration. As a member of our community you have a personal responsibility to behave professionally and you have the right to expect professional behaviour from others.
We encourage you to share your experiences (both good and bad) and ideas for improvements via our suggestion boxes (bottom of the main stairs from the core) or by emailing edi.champion@maths.cam.ac.uk
We hope you enjoy your time here in the CMS.
Professor Nick Dorey (DAMTP) and Professor Ivan Smith (DPMMS)
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee
The EDI Committee's remit is to promote a culture of participation and inclusivity, work to raise awareness of equality and diversity issues, embed EDI values and working practices, identify obstacles and problem areas, identify equality priorities and objectives, propose actions to meet these priorities and monitor progress. It is responsible for both staff and students and to consider all the protected characteristics.
Gender Equality
The Faculty of Mathematics is a supporter of the London Mathematical Society Good Practice Scheme and holds an Athena SWAN Bronze Award. We are keen to attract the best talent from all backgrounds and genders, and therefore strongly encourage women to apply to join us, whether as students or staff. For more information see our Women in Mathematics pages.
LGBT+ Equality
The Faculty has developed an LGBT+ Action Plan (2019-2022). Whilst some of these actions explicitly refer to the LGBT+ community, many are also applicable across multiple protected characteristics and particular actions will also be relevant to race & inclusion, disability & wellbeing and gender equality networks. The Maths LGBT+ mailing list can be joined here: lists.cam.ac.uk/mailman/listinfo/soc-maths-lgbt
Race Equality
The Faculty supports the University's aim to improve racial equality by driving cultural and organisation change to ensure that we excel in attracting and supporting Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff and students, while creating an environment that is conducive to openly discussing race-related issues and challenging racism.
Accessibility
The Centre for Mathematical Sciences is accessible for wheelchair users. There is suitable parking on site, wide corridors and safe stairwells in case of fire. The office accommodation, seminar/lecture rooms and communal areas are accessible to wheelchair users by lift. There are disabled toilets on ground floor of every Pavilion, and more on the lower ground of Central Core and the upper floors of Pavilion B. Induction loops are available in all ten lecture theatres for those with hearing impairments. Assistance dogs for the visually impaired are welcome. Arrangements for members with Specific Learning Difficulties are on an individual basis, in conjunction with the Disability Resource Centre.
Quiet Room
The Faculty has a room available for reflection or prayer in Pavilion F for staff and students. To access this room please contact CMS Reception (reception@maths.cam.ac.uk).

- The University’s Breaking the Silence campaign aims to prevent harassment and sexual misconduct by fostering a zero-tolerance culture free from coercive behaviour, harassment and sexual misconduct, providing support and guidance to members of the University affected by sexual misconduct and handling allegations of harassment and sexual misconduct between students and employees.
Reporting staff or student behaviour
- Individuals can report staff or student behaviour via University mechanisms managed by the Office for Student Conduct, Complaints and Appeals (OSCCA). OSCCA can provide advice to students who want to discuss their options, and disclose their experience, but who have not yet taken the decision to report.
- OSCCA provides an option for anonymous reporting which enables anyone who is or has been a student, staff or visitor to the University to anonymously report any inappropriate behaviour of any kind from staff, students or members of the community, including any form of harassment (including racial harassment), bullying, discrimination and sexual misconduct. The information you provide will be collated and analysed to help monitor the prevalence of incidents that take place across the University and understand the impact of initiatives run by the collegiate University and Cambridge SU.
- Information for Tripos students on how to provide feedback, including reporting incidents involving the behaviour of staff and students, is provided on the course webpages. It is possible to provided anonymous feedback to the Faculty via our online form.
