Introduction
Knowledge of mathematics is essential for all scientists; it is the language with which we formulate theories and natural laws and express our ideas. The Natural Sciences Tripos (NST) includes courses in mathematics; all students study mathematics in the first year (IA) and many choose to study mathematics in the second year (IB).
First Year
First year (IA) students choose one of the following courses:
- Mathematics (Course A or B)
- Run by the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, in the University of Cambridge Faculty of Mathematics.
- Mathematical Biology
- Run by the Faculty of Biology.
Second Year
In the second year (IB) there are three, optional, dedicated mathematics courses:
- Mathematics IB, including Natural Sciences Tripos Computational Mathematics Practicals
- Quantitative Environmental Sciences
- Both run by the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, in the Faculty of Mathematics.
- Mathematical and Computational Biology
- Run by the Faculty of Biology
