Notwithstanding the statement which used to be on our home page, it should be possible to download it from anywhere. If you have difficulty in doing this, please email the CATAM helpline. The printed version should be available from DAMTP Reception in Silver Street from next week. If you have previously requested that this be sent to you, please let us know if you haven't received your copy by 1 August. Ian Farquharson Part IB manual publishedThe manual for the 2002/03 IB projects is now available here. Notwithstanding the statement which used to be on our home page, it should be possible to download it from anywhere. If you have difficulty in doing this or need a paper copy before you return in October, please email the CATAM helpline. There are some significant changes to the administrative arrangements this year. The two core projects need to be submitted early in the Lent Term 2003; they will then be marked and you will be given a detailed breakdown of your marks some time during the Lent Term. The additional projects will then be submitted early in the Easter Term. The maximum credit available for this course is now 80 marks and 8 alphas/betas; all projects now carry the same amount of credit. Full details can be found in the introduction to the manual. Ian Farquharson Minor correction to Part II 4.5In question 3 it should be "... results obtained in question 2 above?" Ian Farquharson Correction to Part II 5.4The line after question 5 should read: Ian Farquharson Correction to Part II 14.3In equation (3) the final term in the expression for K should be 2*Psi_3^3 and not 3*Psi_3^3 as printed in the manual. Ian Farquharson Submission of projectsThe submission of projects will take place in MR6 in the basement of Pavilion B at CMS; the route from CMS reception will be clearly signposted. You are reminded that, as printed in the manuals, submission times are as follows: Part IB Tuesday 30 April, 10am -- 4pm; You will need to fill in a form stating the projects which you wish to submit for examination credit and containing a declaration on collaboration which you must sign. It will help the submission procedure to run smoothly if this form is completed in advance; to that end, copies of it can be found on this site: Part IB dvi format, postscript format, pdf format. Note that the wording on the form assumes that the two pages are on reverse sides of one sheet of paper; if you print it out on two sheets, they should be firmly attached to each other. Copies of this form will be available from CMS reception on both submission days. You are reminded that each project write-up needs to be in a separate plastic wallet for submission. Ian Farquharson 23 Apr 02 CATAM Printer at CMSThere is now a CATAM printer at CMS outside Meeting Room 8. The printer queue name is Maths_CMS_LJ. Output is charged to your CATAM printer credit. David Harris 22 Apr 02 Electronic submission of project filesYou are required to submit copies of your programs to the Project Assessors for checking. Files may be submitted from 22nd April up to the deadlines on 30th April (Part IB) and 1st May (Part II). Click for further information. David Harris 4 Apr 02 - More example programs. Several example programs which are referred to in the CCATSL Manual but not included in the CCATSL distribution files are now available here. Demonstrator availabilityDemonstrators are available in the CATAM Room in Mill Lane between the hours of 2pm and 4pm Monday to Friday during full term and for one week either side of it. They are no longer present at the CMS PWF as there was negligible demand for them last term. Ian Farquharson IB mark scheme publishedThe draft mark schemes for the additional IB projects are now available on this site. Ian Farquharson IB mark scheme publishedThe draft mark schemes for the core IB projects are now available on this site. Ian Farquharson Correction to Part II 19.3Part (b) of question 3 should read "the minimum Hamming distance between distinct codewords". This is a substantive change, so anybody who has completed this part of the project using the old wording should make a note to that effect in their write-up. Ian Farquharson Minor corrections to Part II 10.9Question 3 should read "Estimate the posterior means ..." In the fourth line of question 4 it should be "sample variances" (i.e., plural). Ian Farquharson Uncorrection to Part II 5.4The third correction announced previously was in error; equations (19) & (20) are correct as printed in the original manual -- the factors of x_q should be there. We apologise for any inconvenience this mistake may have caused. Ian Farquharson Minor correction to Part II 23.5The tau_0 in the last sentence of Question 2 should be tau_{nu_0}. Ian Farquharson Corrections to Part II 5.4The line at the top of p.3 should read "... quantity we are calculating ..." In both of the complicated (unnumbered) formulae about halfway down p.4 the squared term inside the square root should be x_q^2+x_{qbar}^2-x_g^2. In equations (19) & (20), the factor of x_q outside the large square bracket should be omitted. [But see above.] Ian Farquharson 04 Dec 01 - CCATSL Version 2.1d released (update)Version 2.1d of the C CATAM Software Library (CCATSL) is now available. Compilation of a file with a name of the form X:/filename.c no longer fails with a CDPATH error. You can now compile files on floppy disk if you really want to. LaTeX installation: location of tex-site.el file is corrected. If Gnuplot is not installed GnuplotfCL gives a helpful message. Please note that the original version of install21d.exe dated 29th November 2001 did not work properly on Windows 95/98/ME systems. Please make sure that you use the revised install21d-1.exe to install CCATSL 2.1d for all versions of Windows. David Harris 30 Nov 01 - Christmas Closing ArrangementsThe Mill Lane Lecture Rooms building will be closed over the Christmas period from Saturday 22nd December to Tuesday 1st January inclusive. Note also that the Mill Lane Lecture Rooms building is closed on Saturdays outside Full Term. There is no access to the CMS site for undergraduates during the same period. When the MLLR and CMS buildings are closed, the PWF will be available for use by authorised keyholders/cardholders, but a continuous service cannot be guaranteed during the Christmas holiday period. CATAM demonstrators will be available at the usual times during the week following the end of Michaelmas Full Term and the week preceding the start of Lent Full Term. DNH 30 Oct 01 - CDPATH error message in CCATSLIf you compile a file with a name of the form X:filename.c (on floppy disk for example), the compilation fails with error message No such directory found via CDPATH environment variable This will be fixed in the next release of CCATSL. In the meantime if you see this error message simply move or copy the file into your ccatsl-projects folder. This is actually more of a feature than a bug as it's not a good idea to compile files on floppy disk (slow), or in the root folder of the C: drive (messy). David Harris 16 Oct 01 - CCATSL Version 2.1c releasedVersion 2.1c of the C CATAM Software Library (CCATSL) is now available. This fixes two bugs in the library, and corrects a fault in the installation process which caused many attempts to install CCATSL to fail. The startup process now copes with space characters in a Windows 95/98/ME PATH. David Harris 28 Sep 01 - CCATSL Version 2.1b releasedVersion 2.1b of the C CATAM Software Library (CCATSL) is now available for PCs running Windows 95/98/ME/NT4/2000. The package consists of the gcc compiler, the emacs editor and the CCATSL function library, together with other optional useful tools such as the gdb program debugger, TeX/LaTeX text formatting, and the gnuplot graph-plotting program. If you are experiencing problems installing CCATSL software on your computer please make sure that you have downloaded this version before asking the CATAM helpline for advice. 1 Aug 01 - Keep your project files secure.Do not leave copies of your project files behind on the local hard disk of PWF or College computers. If someone took a copy of your work and incorporated it in one of their own programs, you might be falsely accused of unfair collaboration by the Project Assessors. If you lose a floppy disk containing your programs, please report it to the CATAM helpline. David Harris 1 Aug 01 - Mill Lane Lecture Rooms securityThe Mill Lane Lecture Rooms building is closed at 5pm, Monday-Friday and at 1pm on Saturday. The ground floor doors are deadlocked at closing time so please leave promptly otherwise you will be TRAPPED inside the building! The hours for which the MLLR building is open are restricted by the University insurers. If theft or damage should occur in a building which is not properly secured the University would not receive full compensation from the insurers. Only authorised keyholders are allowed to work in the CATAM Room at night when the MLLR building is locked. Students MUST NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES be in the building outside the official hours - see the Part IA/IB and Part IIA/IIB Project Booklets for details. If you do find yourself locked in the building at night telephone the University Security Centre on 31818. The PWF logon records are monitored and anyone found working without permission when the building is locked will be reported to University authorities. Users of the Maths PWF may also use the Phoenix User Area and Old Music School PWFs which are operated by the University Computing Service. Late-access keys are available from the Computing Service Reception, Pembroke Street. David Harris 1 Aug 01 - Hard disk cleanup on PWF machinesPlease note that the local hard disk drives on the Maths PWF machines will be cleaned up regularly with little or no warning. You should not keep any permanent files on the hard drive unless you have made arrangements to do so with CATAM staff (email catam@maths.cam.ac.uk). In particular, never store your Computational Project files on the hard drive where they might be deleted or read (and copied) by others. 1 Aug 01 - Printer credit on the CATAM printers. If you run out of credit on the PWF-MATHS printers send email to the CATAM helpline. Do not go to Computing Service Reception - they do not sell printer credit for the CATAM printers. Before an additional printer credit is allocated you may be asked to explain why the 300-page allocation for your Project work was not sufficient. David Harris |
