Faculty of Mathematics

24 March 2018, 12.00pm to 4.00pm

Venue: Centre for Mathematical Sciences

'A mathematician, like a poet or a painter, is a maker of patterns'. Organised by the Faculty's MMP outreach programme as part of the 2018 Cambridge Science Festival, this family maths event encourages you to discover patterns, explore your creative and critical thinking and develop your problem-solving skills with hands-on mathematical activities and games for all ages from 5 to adult. Join us to explore, experiment, discover, question and enjoy!

There will be a range of activities suitable for different ages (5-7; 7-11; 11-14; 14-16 and above). Please note that under 15s must be accompanied by an adult.

Plus - the CIA (Cambridge Image Analysis, no spies just mathematicians) invites you into their pop-up lab where you can explore a variety of interactive imaging exhibitions, from competing with a computer on puzzle solving, to making you look like a celebrity.

Shadow Tomography: Doctors can look at your bones with computed tomography (CT). In this interactive exposition you can experience the ideas behind CT and be a patient in our shadow tomography lab.

Beyond what the eye can see: Microscopy is a tool that allows you to see the very small, from butterfly wings to your own cheek cells. Take the chance to experience these tiny objects yourself and learn about tools to analyse microscopy images.

Puzzle Race: Can you solve puzzles faster than a computer? Here you have the chance to show your puzzle solving skills. While you control the puzzle, the computer only has a picture of it. The game is on, win a chocolate and learn how computers solve puzzles!

Face Fusion Photobooth: Ever wondered how you would look like as a celebrity? We capture an image of yourself and fuse it with a celebrity of your choice. Within minutes you get warped into the world of the rich and famous.

No booking required - drop in throughout the afternoon.

The Maths Cafe will be open from 12 noon until 4pm, serving tea and coffee, soft drinks, sandwiches and snacks.
