Singularities in Space and Time
Speaker: Professor Gary Horowitz (University of California, Santa Barbara)
Einstein's special theory of relativity shows that space and time are unified into a four-dimensional continuum called spacetime. His general theory of relativity shows that spacetime is curved and often becomes singular – i.e. has regions of infinite curvature describing infinite gravitational fields.
In this talk, Professor Gary Horowitz will describe what is known about these singularities: for example, must they always lie inside black holes? He will then go beyond general relativity to string theory and discuss what is known about spacetime singularities in this quantum theory of gravity.
