The Cambridge Mathematics Tripos has justified its reputation for training mathematicians. The Faculty now supplements this theoretical training with the Cambridge Summer Research in Mathematics Programme, a programme to enable students from their second year (part IB) through their Masters year (Part III) to get hands on experience doing research in mathematical disciplines within the University, and in fields requiring innovative mathematics both within the University and in industrial settings.

The Cambridge Summer Research in Mathematics Programme is the umbrella programme which hosts a community of undergraduates and masters students in mathematics who are working on mathematical projects over the summer, offering the following resources:

  • a website enabling those offering projects to reach students wishing to get the experience,
  • a seminar series in which prospective hosts have the opportunity to present their projects to students,
  • a bursary scheme to support students working within the University
  • facilities and support
  • a community with a social programme.

Within that framework, Cambridge Mathematics Placements, CMP (formerly known as the Post Masters Placement Programme, PMP) facilitates placements of students in industry and in other departments and laboratories within the University. Apart from the value of the programme for our students, the CMP programme has proven itself as an effective means of knowledge transfer, an efficient way of tackling problems requiring new approaches, and a fruitful form of engagement with the mathematics departments. Benefits of this programme include

  • A seminar series where potential project hosts from industry and other departments within the University can present their projects to students
  • A presentation day in August open to participants, hosts and supporters, featuring talks on current projects, a chance to network and share in the development of the programme.

Further information on the program is available from the menu on the left. Potential project hosts should start with the Host a Project page, while students should start with the Find a Project page.
