Biography
Weida Liao is a PhD student in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) and at Trinity College, University of Cambridge (UK), supervised by Prof. Eric Lauga. She uses mathematical modelling and numerical simulations to understand both naturally occurring and artificially induced flows inside cells. Weida received her BA and MMath from the University of Cambridge in 2021, focusing on Continuum Mechanics in Part III of the Mathematical Tripos. During her studies, she developed her interest in the fluid dynamics of biological phenomena through research internships at DAMTP on the synchronisation of swimming microorganisms. She now especially enjoys collaborating with experimentalists on viscous flow problems in biology, and her current work includes projects on focused-light-induced cytoplasmic streaming (FLUCS), and cytoplasmic streaming in mammalian oocytes.
