Finding a Project

In order to apply for the Philippa Fawcett Internship programme, you must first secure a research project with a Cambridge Faculty member based either in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) or the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics (DPMMS).

There are a number of possible ways of finding a project which are outlined below. We encourage you to explore them all and to start looking early.

  • View the list of specific projects which are advertised through the ‘Summer Research in Maths (SRIM)’ programme.  Apply for projects you are interested in by writing to the academic listed as the contact;
  • Contact potential supervisors from this list to enquire about potential projects during the recommended project enquiry window (24 January 2023 to 24 February 2023). You may contact supervisors after 24 February, but be aware that they may have already agreed to supervise another student.
  • Propose a project that you are personally interested in. Use the list of supervisors to identify potential supervisors in the appropriate research area and contact them to discuss your project proposal.

When contacting a potential supervisor for the first time, please cc. philippafawcettinterns@maths.cam.ac.uk and let them know that you are planning to apply for the Philippa Fawcett Internship programme. Only submit your application to the programme after you have found a supervisor and decided on a project: the name of a supervisor and a project description are required in the application form.

Please attach your CV as well as a transcript (if available) when you contact potential supervisors.  We recommend that as well as explaining why you would like to work with them on a project - what is interesting to you about their work?  what attracts you to the project they have advertised (if applicable) - you also include information about yourself: what skills and experience can you bring to a project?  What makes you a strong candidate for the Philippa Fawcett Internship programme?
