Mathematics for Natural Sciences Tripos (NST)

Knowledge of mathematics is essential for all scientists; it is the language with which we formulate theories and natural laws and express our ideas. The Natural Sciences Tripos (NST) includes courses in mathematics; all students study mathematics in the first year (IA) and many choose to study mathematics in the second year (IB).

First year (IA) students choose one of the following four courses:

  • Mathematics (Course A or B)
    • Run by Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, in the Faculty of Mathematics.
  • Mathematical Biology
    • Run by Faculty of Biology.
  • Elementary Mathematics for Biologists
    • Jointly run by the Faculties of Biochemistry, Experimental Psychology, Pathology, Pharmacology and Physiology, Development and Neuroscience.

In the second year (IB) there is a single, optional, dedicated mathematics course:
